Meet PRC User Anthony Darrah

Posted Feb 19, 2018 - 10:54am

Meet: Anthony Darrah
Age: 12
Device: Accent® 1000 for 2 years. Unity® 84 sequenced
Lives in: OH
Favorites: Ice cream for sure!! Reading books, cheering for his sister at softball, playing baseball, music and dancing, and of course socializing with everyone!! Anthony has never met a stranger.

Loving, friendly, outgoing…Accent 1000 user Anthony Darrah has a smile for everyone he meets.

“Anthony is so outgoing,” said his mom, Janet. “It seems he’s on a mission to love and hug everyone wherever we go!”

In addition to many friends, Anthony has two special best friends in his life. His first is his sister Anna, 16, and the two are inseparable.

“They have a very special bond,” said his mom, Janet. “He wants to go everywhere she goes.”

His other best friend is the family’s six-pound Yorkshire Terrier, Ophelia.

Communicating Made Easy

Anthony with his Accent 1000

Using his Accent 1000, Anthony is now able to answer people and talk with them.

According to Janet, “Everyone seems to ask how old he is, and using the device he can tell them as well as talk to them about food, family and friends.”

And, of course, tell them about Ophelia: “Whenever he meets anyone, he likes to tell everyone he has a dog and she is at home.”

Unlike most children, Anthony is an eager student who actually likes to go to school.

“He loves to ride the bus and go to school,” said Janet. “He wakes up each morning asking if he is going to school on the bus and is upset when he is not going!”

The Road to PRC

It was at school that Anthony and his family were introduced to the Accent 1000 and Unity.

“His speech therapist at his school prompted us to get the Accent to help Anthony communicate at school and socially,” said Janet. “She was an integral part of the process to obtain it and has been training him on it. He also has a speech therapist outside of school who works with him for use in daily requests and conversations.”

Anthony has even been able to customize his device to include everyone around him.

“He loves his family, our dog and his many friends, and they all have icons on his device. He was very excited to add them all, and it wasn’t difficult to customize the icons,” said Janet.

Living Life to the Fullest

All in all, Anthony and his family are enjoying how the Accent device, coupled with the Unity language system, have enabled him to fully express himself.

“Anthony uses his Accent at school each day to communicate with his teachers and friends,” said Janet. “It has definitely reduced his frustration in communicating with others.”
