Individuals who use AAC are often at risk for developing limited literacy skills. This can be a result of reduced experiences, limited direct, targeted intervention, and low expectations. This two-hour training begins with basic information about literacy development and then focuses on emergent literacy intervention strategies for AAC learners. Participants will learn how to provide shared reading, independent reading, emergent writing activities of predictable chart writing and independent writing with the alphabet, as well as alphabet and phonological awareness. Group activities and discussion will highlight ways to incorporate strategies, resources, and tools into literacy interventions for emergent AAC learners with time for practice. Anyone supporting individuals using AAC who are at an emergent literacy level will walk away with practical information to begin using right away to foster emergent literacy with their AAC learners.
