Overview

SLPs are the primary professionals driving the acquisition of an AAC device. SLPs are the most competent and knowledgeable members of the team to recommend a device that will enable an individual to develop language using AAC. Because language and AAC use are complicated processes, how does the SLP get all members of the team on board? There are many different challenges an SLP may face in this process! The SLP is the most qualified professional to help educate team members, but time to gather resources/supports and develop other skills is often a limiting factor for SLPs. This presentation will focus on addressing the most commonly reported barriers and arguments that SLPs encounter in various settings. Through the use of case studies and scenarios, presenters will review a common barrier to team buy-in and provide several possible responses and resources to aid SLPs in getting team buy-in. Additionally, this presentation will focus on using other strategies, such as conflict resolution, to help build and develop a strong team that will successfully implement AAC.

Learner Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify three resources that can be used to educate team members on AAC implementation.
  2. Summarize three common barriers or excuses used by other professionals or people when trying to implement AAC.
  3. Develop a bank of resources, containing at least three materials, that can be used to support discussions revolving around AAC in the SLP’s work setting.
